Companies can prevent air pollution and help with the traffic problem by encouraging employees to take the bus, bike, carpool (or vanpool) to work -- or to telecommute or work extended hours for nine days in a ten-day pay period. 

Some workplaces reward employees for using alternative transportation by offering:

• Free or discounted transit bus passes, commuter bus tickets, or vanpool fares

• Prizes, or special breakfasts or lunches for people who use alternative transportation

• A small amount of vacation time credit for using alternative transportation for so many days in a pay period.
